Most children are ready to begin guitar lessons around ages 7 or 8, although every child develops
at their own pace. Readiness depends on factors such as hand size, finger strength, attention
span, and overall maturity. If your child isn't quite ready yet, we'd be happy to recommend
another music program that will prepare them for future success.
Yes. Every guitar student should have an instrument at home to practice between lessons. We
recommend purchasing a properly sized guitar that fits the student's age and body size. Whether
you're considering an acoustic, electric, or bass guitar, our staff is happy to help you choose the
right instrument for your goals and budget.
Both are excellent choices! The best guitar depends on the student's musical interests. Students
who enjoy singer-songwriter, country, worship, or acoustic music often begin on acoustic guitar,
while students interested in rock, blues, or metal may prefer an electric guitar. If you're unsure,
we'd be happy to help you decide.
Absolutely! Many of our students are complete beginners. Lessons are personalized to each
student's age, experience, goals, and learning style, creating an encouraging environment where
every student can learn and grow at their own pace.
Yes! While students build a strong foundation in chords, rhythm, technique, music reading, ear
training, and musicianship, we also incorporate songs they enjoy whenever possible. Learning
familiar music keeps students motivated while helping them develop the skills they'll use for
years to come.
For most beginners, yes...at first. Pressing the strings can make your fingertips a little sore during
the first few weeks, but don't let that discourage you. It's a normal part of learning to play.
With regular, consistent practice, your fingertips naturally develop protective calluses that make
playing much more comfortable.
The best approach is to practice a little each day rather than
waiting several days between practice sessions. Before long, you'll hardly notice the discomfort,
and you'll be enjoying the music instead.
The first few weeks are the hardest. Stick with it! Your fingers will get stronger, your playing
will improve, and you'll be glad you did.
Consistency is the key to success. We encourage students to practice a little each day rather than
trying to fit everything into one long practice session. Your teacher will provide age-appropriate
practice goals that help students build steady progress and confidence between lessons.
Yes! Students have multiple opportunities throughout the year to perform in optional recitals,
showcases, Rock EDU bands, festivals, and other special events. These performances celebrate
progress, build confidence, and give students the opportunity to share their music with family,
friends, and the community.
Our Guitar Syllabus Program provides students with a clear path for musical growth. As they
master specific skills and repertoire, they progress through carefully designed levels that build
technique, musicianship, and confidence one step at a time.
The Musical Ladder System celebrates each student's accomplishments with fun milestones,
wristbands, certificates, and awards as they progress through their musical journey. It's a
wonderful way to recognize hard work, encourage perseverance, and keep students motivated.
At The Music Garden, we believe guitar lessons should do more than teach chords and songs.
Through personalized instruction, experienced teachers, our Guitar Syllabus Program, and the
Musical Ladder System, students follow a clear path for growth while building confidence,
perseverance, creativity, and a lifelong love of music.
More importantly, they become part of a caring musical community where they are encouraged
to learn, grow, perform, and discover what they're truly capable of.
